Lt. Governor Landrieu Urges Citizens To Volunteer On MLK Day

Baton Rouge, La. - Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu is urging all Louisiana citizens to make January 18 A Day On, Not a Day Off in honor of Martin Luther King Day by participating in one of the many service projects occurring across the state. The Louisiana Serve Commission in the Office of the Lt. Governor has identified dozens of projects where citizens can participate in making their communities stronger, including Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Chalmette, Lafayette, Lake Charles, New Orleans, Slidell, Shreveport, Thibodeaux and West Monroe.

"MLK Day is a day to reflect on how each one of us can make a difference in our communities. It is also an opportunity to use the holiday as a springboard for service throughout the year," Landrieu said.

Projects this year range from litter abatement and park beautification to helping citizens go green by installing energy efficient light bulbs in their homes to school renovations including painting and landscaping.

"There are opportunities for people of all abilities and interests. Our goal is for all citizens to find a place to engage in meaningful service in their communities," said Sen. Ann Duplessis, chair of the Louisiana Serve Commission.
