National Service in Louisiana, Our Final Spotlight

This month, we will bring our series of highlighting Volunteer Louisiana AmeriCorps State programs to a close by focusing on programs in the New Orleans area.  New Orleans and the surrounding parishes have the largest concentration of AmeriCorps State programs, with seven programs serving four parishes.

Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana provides after school and summertime education-based and mentoring activities via the Project Learn Initiative to at-risk children in four Boys & Girls Club sites in the Greater New Orleans area.

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans AmeriCorps members are enrolled in the Catholic Charities Workforce Development initiative, receiving ongoing workforce training and having hands-on work experience through the partnership with the agency's Food for Seniors (FFS) program.

City Year New Orleans City Year partners with six public charter schools in New Orleans to help keep at-risk students in school and on-track to high school graduation.  Through the Whole School Whole Child Program, corps members provide additional in-class and after-school support to ensure that more of New Orleans' students who are the most academically challenged, have the extra resources to get them back on track in school.

Communities in Schools of Greater New Orleans AmeriCorps members serve in CIS’ Sustaining Momentum in Student Achievement program by providing mentoring and life skills to groups in ten public schools.

Playworks Louisiana AmeriCorps members provide a school-wide evidence-based program designed to utilize play to create supportive environments with reduced bullying, where all students feel safe, supported, and fully engaged in school in low-income schools in the Greater New Orleans area. AmeriCorps members will be responsible for positively impacting the entire school environment to reduce bullying, thereby creating a safe space for students to increase their overall academic engagement.

ReNew Schools ReNEW-Reinventing Education AmeriCorps members serve full time providing direct tutoring in reading and math in six high-poverty, high-minority, and priority schools in New Orleans. This program engages at-risk students in tutoring.

Up2Us Sports – Louisiana Up2Us harnesses the power of sports to reduce youth violence, promote health, and inspire academic success for kids in every community. In New Orleans, Up2Us is targeting the childhood obesity epidemic by providing underserved neighborhoods with AmeriCorps members who serve as sports-based youth development coaches for approximately 2,500 kids.

In addition to the programs above, Teach for America and Louisiana Delta Service Corps (mentioned in last month’s highlight) serve 60 schools and 10 non-profits in the Greater New Orleans area.

In total, Volunteer Louisiana has 17 AmeriCorps State programs with approximately 948 members serving 30 parishes in Louisiana.
