Tickfaw State Park Invasive Removal and Trail Clearing Project

Parishes Served: Livingston

This service-learning program will take place at Tickfaw State Park in Livingston Parish Louisiana and involves removal of an invasive species of tree and clearing a trail to give visitors to the park access to an additional 600 acres of park property. A portion of this project will be devoted to the removal of an invasive species of tree, the Tallow. Because of the abundance of Tallow trees at Tickfaw State Park, native species of trees are unable to repopulate the park. The local wildlife that once thrived on these native trees do not use this tree and are therefore negatively impacted. Another portion of this project will be devoted to trail clearing and will include cutting small limbs, trees and under brush that have grown up on a previously uncleared piece of park property. The trail will be an oval loop and approximately 1 mile in length. Clearing of this trail will increase the number of acres available to visitors to the park for wildlife viewing, education and outdoor recreation. Partners of this program include student participants from Istrouma High School and Staring Lane Education Center and teachers and other faculty from those schools. Both schools are located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
