High School students in the S.T.A.R (Students Teaching and Reaching) course will complete a year long project to work with parish 1st grade elementary students at Mimosa Elementary on reading fluency in order to create quality CD books and educational support materials to be used with visually impaired students. The final book products will be donated to the New Orleans' region Lighthouse for the Blind. The S.T.A.R students will conduct research on literacy and learn about special education; research will be conduct through internet search engines, by interviewing, observing and listening to guest speakers on special education, and through a visit to the Lighthouse for the Blind. The final component will be a Family Literacy Event planned and organized by STAR and elementary students where all participating students, along with their parents, will engage in reading activities and story telling. CD books will be presented to the Light House for the Blind.
