Louisiana 4-H Seeds of Service School Garden Project

Louisiana 4-H Seeds of Service School Garden program is an interdisciplinary approach designed to educate youth while serving their community.In this outdoor classroom, youth apply math, reading, writing and science to a "real-world" setting.  The project provides an opportunity to link between service and learning through outdoor classroom. The major objectives of the program are to teach youth about environmental stewardship and scientific principles while getting connected to and serving the community. Partnering with the LSU AgCenter 4-H Youth Development Program and the Master Gardener Program, eleven schools from across the state in high poverty areas are making subject matter come alive through school gardens. Over 800 youth will be Elementary Schools involved include Mimosa Park Elementary School (St. Charles). DeRidder Junior High (Beauregard) and Carencro Middle School (Lafayette). Schools partnering with local FFA chapters include Beauregard Career Center and West St. Mary High School. Robert Byrd High School (Caddo) will involve youth in ninth through twelve grades. Some of the schools involved received ratings as minimal academic growth, school in decline or academically unacceptable.
