Kids Interacting with Seniors Successfully (KISS)
Parishes Served: St. TammanyFifth graders will walk to a nursing home at least twice a month to interact, entertain and learn from senior residents as a part of KISS-Kids Interacting with Seniors Successfully. Students will meet GLEs primarily in English Language Arts and Social Studies, but also some in Math, Science and Technology, along with achieving their gifted IEP goals and objectives. The main focus will be on activities that will attain ELA GLEs and goals include planning, preparing and researching senior biographies which will include timelines, historical and scientific events, photos, life comparisons, and poetry. These will be published in a bound book to present to the seniors at the end of the year celebration. Students will write letters and notes to seniors on a regular basis. In addition to this, students will produce a video of their yearlong visits, and a CD of photos. Students will also make their own memory book for the year. Social studies GLEs will be included in our program when students make their historical/scientific timeline and by learning about history first hand from the residents. Students will also be reading historical fiction, biographies and autobiographies and will gain knowledge of historical events. Students will be researching and learning about aging and health issues. Math skills will be incorporated into the program by figuring out such things as the percentage of men vs. women in the nursing home, number of Alzheimer residents and regular residents, ages of residents, etc.
