Creating Smiles for the Future
Parishes Served: CaddoWhile Caddo Career & Technology Center (CCTC) Dental Assisting students cannot provide sealants, cleaning and exams, they can provide children with the knowledge of what causes decay, correct oral hygiene techniques and how to make good food choices. Partnering with Head Start and Title 1 elementary schools, CCTC students will incorporate their technical skills learned in the dental assisting class to develop presentations and activities to teach the students good oral hygiene and the effect that sugar and acids have on teeth. The Head Start children will also have their toothprints taken. These toothprints capture the child's tooth imprint, DNA and body scent. Although the tooth imprint will change as the child grows, the DNA and scent will remain the same in the toothprint material for 12-15 years. The DNA and body scent can be used for identification purposes if the occasion should ever arise. Information for the parents about the toothprints and how to preserve the material will be included in the dental care kits that each child will take home.
