New for 2010: Summer of Service Grant

The Louisiana Serve Commission announces funding available for a Summer of Service 2010 Program from June 1 to August 10 for up to 500 6th -9th grade students. Eligible applicants include public schools and nonprofit organizations with experience working with youth. Programs will implement a community-based service-learning program for up to 500 disadvantaged youth who will provide their community with a minimum of 100 hours of direct service. In return for these service hours, each student will receive a $500 education award from the Corporation for National and Community Service. This is a short-term opportunity that will engage students in environmental/energy conservation projects that benefit their community while strengthening classroom skills. There is no match requirement for the grant.

Funding for this program is contingent upon the Louisiana Serve Commission being awarded Summer of Service 2010 grant funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

School Year Grant Opportunities

The Learn and Serve America School-Based program funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service for school-aged youth is administered through an interagency agreement between the Louisiana Serve Commission (LSC) in the Office of Lieutenant Governor and the Louisiana Department of Education. This is a cost reimbursement federal grant (CFDA 94.004). Learn and Serve grants require awarded federal funds be matched dollar-for-dollar with cash or in-kind contributions of services, goods, or materials.

The purpose of Learn and Serve America school based programs is to provide K-12 public school educators with financial resources to design and implement effective service-learning programs that:

  • expand high-quality service-learning into more K-12 schools, particularly those with large numbers of youth in disadvantaged circumstances, as a strategy to improve retention and graduation through increased civic and academic engagement; and
  • engage young people (student participants) in service-learning activities that directly address community needs in order to build healthier communities.

Eligible applicants for this specific program are:

  • K-12 public school teachers, public schools, and public school districts are eligible. This includes charter schools receiving funding from the Louisiana Department of Education.
NOTE: Multiple applications may be submitted by a school or school district. However, the program coordinator or alternate coordinator can be listed on only one grant application. Also, multiple applications from a school district may be subject to negotiation for a district implementation grant.
  • Public or private non-profit organizations that have been in existence for more than one year and have expertise in the provision of services to meet educational, public safety, human or environmental needs, and can make projects available to student participants are eligible to apply. The public entity will be required to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the schools whose students will be involved in the service-learning program. This Memorandum of Understanding will state the responsibilities, goals, and activities agreed upon by each party involved in this collaboration. The Memorandum of Understanding must be signed by all parties and submitted with the Certification/Assurances page by April 23, 2010.
